million workers. many in states like west virginia and kentucky. still, two of the top three coal producing states in the country. both states were reliably blue. that's not longer the case on all levels. during the clinton administration, environmental law began to gain traction and new, clean air standards were put in place. the party began to embrace the movement more broadly and supporters began to go elsewhere. the important thing tho note here, this isn't something that happened just under president obama. democrats have been losing the cold wars, if you will, for the better part of two decades. the last time west virginia and kentucky backed a democrat was bill clinton in 1996. he won west virginia by 93,000 votes and kentucky by 13,000. four years later, gore lost both states and it was a 41,000 vote gap in west virginia. more than 230,000 in kentucky. the gap got wider when john kerry lost in 2004. you see the pattern here. president obama improved on those numbers slightly in 2008, but still lost both states and his numbers fell off the table, if you will, this past nove

? >> tennessee and kentucky have seen the worst of it. we've had about three tornado reports. we've had about 195 total updated for you live there. newly notice the concentration overnight had been through arkansas, louisiana and the ohio river. abdomen storms are starting to plow their way right across kentucky and especially tennessee. these are all tornado warnings heading right over nashville. thankfully, those storms have weakened a little bit over louisville and bowling green but those are going to slide over the east coast today. an area of greater concern, the area of yellow today, everyone here has a chance of severe storms, damaging winds. it will only last about 30 minutes or less but when that line of storms comes through you'll feel it and you'll want to seek shelter. atlanta, heading through pittsburgh, west virginia, and then afternoon traveling through much of the carolinas. again, all eyes, best chance of tornadoes is in the state of tennessee. thankfully, no fatalities overnight. we'll talk about the snowstorm going on in the northern plains later. that's a look at the national

with extreme weather. right now there are tornado sirens going off in louisville, kentucky. the storm being described as wild and dangerous. late last night a tornado touched down in mississippi. there are reports of two others hitting arkansas and missouri. several homes have been damaged trees down. this morning there are still tornado warnings as twoeld you in place. then there is indiana. severe storms also damaged homes there knocking out power and forcing roads to close. maria poll lemolina has been tr the storms. >> we are talking about severe weather on this january. we typically don't see temperatures this warm that is why we are eeiseeing severe wear outbreaks. another widespread risk over the panhandle mississippi and through southern pennsylvania. another day where many cities will be impacted by the strong to severe storms possible damaging wind gusts 60 miles an hour. others in itself can cause damage. we have reports of flooding and a flooding threat across places in the great lakes and midwest associated with the same storm system. many of the storms aren't fast moving

storms. tornado sirens in kentucky and tennessee. here's the recap. four tornadoes so far reported. no fatalities. no towns destroyed. a lot of isolated homes with roofs off. a lot of those things of those nature. the blue dots are wind reports. they are plowing their way through areas of indiana, kentucky, tennessee, through mississippi. we'll include alabama in this and areas of eastern tennessee and kentucky. the most dangerous storms now just rolled through the nashville area. these are tornado warnings. this little cluster has had the strongest winds with it it and the most signs of rotation of tornadic signatures. so anywhere to the east of nashville, give it a half hour and wait until the storms are gone and you'll be safe. also strong storms near richmond and louisville. now a wider view, these storms continue all the way down through mississippi. they are going to roll all the way to the east coast. in the areas of yellow, this line of storms will roll through your town. 15 to 30 minutes. they will have the chance of knocking down trees. that includes everybody up to pitts

have a storm coming it chills just about everybody. all of northern ohio, kentucky, west virginia, almost all of north carolina. then we'll deal with icy problems. freezing rain. atlanta north, especially north georgia, mountains are going to get it good. and watch out there, north of memphis, nashville, too, depending on how warm your temperatures get now it's just beginning and you can see how widespread it is. the white is the snow. again, a lot of light snow. heading for chicago during the morning rush hour. could pick up an inch or two of fluffy snow. there's that ice and the pink shading is where we're getting freezing rain over kentucky. again, very light now but more intense throughout the day. how much snow? this is not a blockbuster event. in most cases, no shoveling or plowing will be needed. for the most part, one or two inches, the higher totals, some of the areas of west virginia, we may get enhancement from richmond to norfolk, to virginia beach. looks like mostly a miss for all of new england, from d.c., to the south, one or two inches later today. again, that's la

, kentucky, and we will see those slowly spread eastward through the morning and into this afternoon as well. as for rainfall totals, it does look like we will see a swath from western tennessee through western kentucky, right up into ohio where we could end up with 2 to 3 inches of rain. it's all about temperatures with this system, too. out ahead of it it's real mild. back behind it, it's really cold. look at the next few days in chicago. today is a around 58. tomorrow is 53. all of the sudden on sunday, temperatures crash into the mid-20s. we stay there heading into early next week. but washington, d.c., it's the exact opposite. out ahead of this system, we will see a few late-day showers in d.c. today. 49 degrees. then 59. then 68 degrees by sunday. even as we head into next week, it should still stay mild and at least above average, especially for monday and tuesday. we are looking at temps this weekend to be about 15 to 20 degrees above average all across the east coast. it does come with some clouds, but i think people will be happy about the temperatures. >> i love it when you b
